In the rapidly revitalizing central core of New Rochelle, NY, the future of city living has replaced an old printing warehouse along Huguenot St. The Printhouse, a six-story, 68,300 square foot, mixed-use development, offers 71 apartments and retail space within a short walking distance of the Metro-North Railroad. The development’s close proximity to New York City and easy transit access, is ideal for those seeking a more affordable urban lifestyle.
Targeting young professionals, the building’s design includes integrated technology such as building-wide WiFi access, in-unit USB jacks, keyless entry through a cell phone app and a mail room with digital notification screens. The apartments (studio, one- and two-bedrooms) feature modern, high-quality finishes and large windows for natural light. All units are equipped with an appliance package including a washer and dryer, and smart home technology. Select units also have walk-in closets. Upper floor apartments have balconies facing Huguenot Street. Resident amenities include a game room and lounge with an area for social events, a rooftop terrace, a state-of-the-art fitness center, parking, and refrigerated storage for meal deliveries.
Built on the site of a former printing business, the design embraces that heritage. Rectangular frames on the exterior reference the tools and cases used in typesetting. The horizontal orientation of those frames and light-colored panels sprinkled throughout the rainscreen system, combine with groupings of windows to suggest the look of metal type pieces set in a form ready for printing.
With parking tucked behind the building the design promotes an active streetscape with 2,400 square feet of retail and commercial, flexible for shared-work spaces and a coffee shop. Combined with the residential entry, the fully glazed ground level, brings light and dynamism to the street wall. Given the renewed interest and investment in the city’s downtown, the design also makes a statement about modern living in New Rochelle. In so doing, this amenity rich building offers a picture of growth and revitalization for many inner ring suburban cities and towns.
